The Best & Worst of Halloween Havoc
We are only a few days away from WWE's annual PLE (Premium Live Event) NXT Halloween Havoc 2024, which will take place live in Hershey, Pennsylvania, on October 27th.
Originally produced by World Championship Wrestling between 1989 and 2000, this pay-per-view has experienced many highs and lows throughout its history. So, let's look back at some of the best (and worst) moments of WCW Halloween Havoc.
BEST - Rey Mysterio Jr vs Eddie Guerrero, WCW Halloween Havoc 1997.
WCW Cruiserweight Championship vs Mask Match.
You cannot talk about Best of Halloween Havoc without mentioning the infamous match between WCW Cruiserweight Champion Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio Jr.
The match between a young Guerrero (30) and an even younger Mysterio (22) is considered one of the best of all time. Mysterio would win the match and capture the WCW Cruiserweight Championship while styled in his now infamous 'Phantom' ring gear.
WORST - Hollywood Hogan vs The Warrior, WCW Halloween Havoc 1998.
The match between Hogan and Warrior is considered one of the worst in Halloween Havoc and professional wrestling history. It was so bad that Wrestling Observer Newsletter editor Dave Meltzer awarded this match minus five stars out of five (the lowest ever for a WCW match).
Hogan vs. Warrior II was nothing that fans or WCW expected, especially compared to their previous bout in 1990 at WrestleMania VI, in which The Ultimate Warrior defeated Hulk Hogan for the WWF Championship.
BEST - Goldberg vs Diamond Dallas Page, WCW Halloween Havoc 1998.
WCW World Heavyweight Championship Match.
Following the disastrous Hogan vs. Warrior match was the main event between Goldberg vs. DDP for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, considered one of Bill Goldberg's best matches.
The caveat is that the pay-per-view had a runtime of 3.5 hours rather than the allocated 3 hours, causing the event feed to black out to pay-per-view buyers at home just as DDP and Goldberg were about to lock up.
The WWE Vault YouTube channel recently broadcasted the Halloween Havoc event, leaving in the blackout as it was broadcast live in 1998.
WORST - Abdullah the Butcher, Cactus Jack, Scott Hall & Vader vs El Gigante, The Steiner Brothers & Sting, WCW Halloween Havoc 1991.
Chamber of Horrors Match.
A four-on-four fiasco inside an electrified steel cage. This match aims to put your opponent in an electric chair.
Do we need to say anymore?
BEST - Cactus Jack vs Vader, WCW Halloween Havoc 1993.
Texas Deathmatch.
This match is a violent brawl between two of the most recognized 'toughest' pro wrestlers ever. Of course, Foley takes bumps that make you question how his career went on for as long as it did.
If you can find the match, we recommend watching these beasts borderline kill each other in and out of the ring. Due to the graphic nature of the match, WWE doesn't share it online through their social networks.
NXT Halloween Havoc 2024.
This weekend will mark the 4th Halloween Havoc under WWE's NXT brand after reviving the annual event in 2020.
The match card for this weekend's event will see NXT Champion Trick Williams defend his title against Ethan Page in a Devil's Playground match.
Also, North American Champion Tony D'Angelo takes on challenger Oba Femi in a Tables, Ladders, and Scares match.
